Live sound is a lot more than just pushing faders. It's mixing monitors, soundcheck, gain structure, signal flow, working with bands, setting up speaker systems...and a lot more.
Hi, I’m Scott, the creator of Essential Live Sound Training. As a professional engineer, I got my first pro live gig over 20 years ago at small club in Iowa. The hardest part was I had to learn everything on my own. All the live sound resources were either outdated or useless and when I asked older engineers for help, they acted like I didn’t have clearance to hear their classified Top Secret information.
So, like many live engineers, I learned everything on the job.
It took me years to get my knowledge to a level where I was comfortable mixing huge shows and touring with bands. The frustrating part is I could’ve drastically accelerated the process if I’d had access to quality “street smart” live sound resources.
And I see this same thing happening today.
There just isn’t affordable, practical information out there for live engineers. You either have to pay tens of thousands of dollars for audio school, or try and figure it through trial and A LOT of error. That's why I created Essential Live Sound Training (ELST).
ELST is an online course that will teach everything you need to work successfully as a live engineer.
ELST features tons of high quality videos that cover all the essential topics that you MUST understand if you want to move up the ranks and work at bigger venues, go on tour, or be the go-to engineer at your house of worship.
Some of what this course offers:
A huge problem with most live sound courses is they only show the technical side. They completely ignore the creative (and my favorite) element of live sound: mixing.
That’s why I created the Mixing Demos section in the Essential Live Sound Training.
I let you watch over my shoulder as I mix tracks from a live show on a digital console.
And show you step-by-step how to apply the concepts we learn to a real mix.
A few things that I show you in the Mixing Demos:

"This training was absolutely incredible. The sections are well thought out, concise, and excellent quality. The individual videos in each section are easy to follow and the post-video quizzes help reinforce the core concepts. I spent about an hour a day for 10 days and learned more from Essential Live Sound Training than I did in 2 years of college in audio."

"Scott, I have been mixing live sound since 1998 and I have never seen such a well-done educational platform as you have created. I audited this course to determine if it was right for our church sound technicians and it passed with flying colors. Our young techs are very excited to get started! You really are a class-act, brother. Your teaching style is humble, yet confident. Your ability to briefly describe very technical material is exceptional. Thanks for putting this together and sharing your wealth of knowledge."
- Lloyd Richardson, Charleston, South Carolina, USA
"Scott is able to capture the nuances of what we do in the studio and scale it up arena size. As crucial as his skill, is the fact that he cares and listens to his clients."
- Ariel Rechtshaid, Grammy award-winning producer for Haim, Madonna, Usher, Vampire Weekend, Adele, and more
My name's Scott Adamson and I've been mixing FOH for live shows since I was a teenager. During that time I've been lucky to tour with a ton of amazing artists: Haim, Passion Pit, St. Vincent, Ingrid Michaelson, Sleater-Kinney, Matt and Kim, The Hold Steady, Jimmy Eat World, and many more.
During that time, I've mixed at some of the most iconic venues in the world, from the Sydney Opera House to Madison Square Garden to the main stage at Coachella. And along the way I had to learn everything on the job! I really wish there had been a good resource to get all this information when I was starting out - it would have put me light years ahead in building my skills.
That's why taking the time to build a reliable online resource seemed like a good idea. I figured it would be incredibly useful for anyone trying to learn about this stuff. And now that The Production Academy has given free material to thousands of people around the globe, I'm happy we're helping people who want to be involved in live music!
