When I started out, I had all kinds of problems learning about live sound. The only resources I could find were either outdated or not really that helpful. And it's still hard to find good info! So that's why I built this Essential Live Sound Training. If I had this resource back then, I would have been light years ahead in building my skills.
One of the best parts of my job is working with like minded people who love music. And that's how I've always got work - by friends and colleagues recommending me for bigger and bigger gigs. I've mixed some amazing shows that I never would have if I wasn't part of a community. Shows at places like Madison Square Garden, Main Stage at Coachella, Sydney Opera House, Red Rocks, and many more big and small.
BUT - if hadn't developed my skills, they wouldn't have recommended me. I needed a TON of technical knowledge, in addition to a good mixing ear, to be able to show up and take advantage of the opportunity.
Of course, I had to learn all of it on the job. I had to work SO many shows to accumulate all the technical knowledge I needed to operate at a pro level. And even though hands on experience is very important for every engineer, I would have so much better off if I had the Essential Live Sound Training as a resource.
With over 100 videos, we go through the entire system from the microphones on stage all the way to the speaker system. And along the way, we discuss all kinds of tips and techniques on how to shape and control the sound to get a great mix going. All of our curriculum includes really handy diagrams and quizzes to help the learning experience.
Then we see how these concepts are applied on a digital console, using real tracks from a live show! These Mixing Demos are a great way to see the settings I use for each instrument to build a solid mix for a band.
Plus, I hold live Q+A webinars with other engineers and we get conversational about all the gear, tips, and techniques we use when we mix live music. And even though they happen live, they are archived here in this training for you to watch on-demand.
So, if you want to bring your pro audio knowledge to a professional touring level, this is absolutely the best place to do it online. Check out one of the videos below, which is all about VCAs:
"The Production Academy is an awesome online resource that provides clear and reliable information on all the technical things your need to know to work in Live Sound or the Touring industry. SoundGirls.Org uses The Production Academy for our Live Sound Camps for Girls and recommends The Production Academy to all our members!"
- Karrie Keyes, Monitor Engineer for Pearl Jam and Executive Director for SoundGirls.org
"Scott is able to capture the nuances of what we do in the studio and scale it up arena size. As crucial as his skill, is the fact that he cares and listens to his clients."
- Ariel Rechtshaid, Grammy award-winning producer for Haim, Madonna, Usher, Vampire Weekend, Adele, and more
My name's Scott Adamson and I've been mixing FOH for live shows since I was a teenager. During that time I've been lucky to tour with a ton of amazing artists: Haim, Passion Pit, St. Vincent, Ingrid Michaelson, Sleater-Kinney, Matt and Kim, The Hold Steady, Jimmy Eat World, and many more.
During that time, I've mixed at some of the most iconic venues in the world, from the Sydney Opera House to Madison Square Garden to the main stage at Coachella. And along the way I had to learn everything on the job! I really wish there had been a good resource to get all this information when I was starting out - it would have put me light years ahead in building my skills.
That's why taking the time to build a reliable online resource seemed like a good idea. I figured it would be incredibly useful for anyone trying to learn about this stuff. And now that The Production Academy has given free material to thousands of people around the globe, I'm happy we're helping people who want to be involved in live music!
